Rebuilding the global compact on education

All persons and institutions interested in education, and in a special way the Pious Schools, have welcomed with interest and commitment Pope Francis’ call for the “Restoration of the Global Compact on Education”. It is a strong and clear call, calling us not only to renew our commitment to education, but also to a common dynamic of working for education as an instrument of social change, as a vehicle for another world that can and must be built by all.

Since the moment the Pope called us to this enormous challenge, I have been involved in some working groups, especially in coordinating the responses that the different religious communities dedicated to education can give. I would like to give you a summary of what is at stake in this issue of GLOBAL COMPACT ON EDUCATION.

Human dignity and rights

Integral ecology

Peace and citizenship

Piarist internațional meeting to promote the reconstruction of the Global Compact on Education

As a follow-up to Pope Francis’ call for a “Global Compact on Education “, the Pious Schools have initiated a process to deepen and promote the current challenges in education. For Pedro Aguado, Superior General of the Piarists, it is a “tremendous” process to rethink education and give it its place as the key to a better world, to a more just and fraternal society. “For us Piarists, sons and daughters of the founder of the Christian popular school, it is easy to understand this process because we have been working on it for four centuries,” Aguado explains.

Father General made the three options for promoting the whole process very clear: to put the person at the centre; to promote all processes that help the person to grow; and to educate in the service of the common good of all people. It is about finding the best way to engage in this universal task of restoring the Global Compact On Education. “We are facing a challenge that has already been started by Calasanz and in which we can and must continue to do our best today,” he stresses.

International Piarist Meeting

For this reason, Piarist educators have been called to participate in an international Piarist meeting to be held telematically with simultaneous translation in the official languages of the Order (Spanish, Italian, French and English) next Saturday, 3 October. Among others, Lasallian Juan Antonio Ojeda, member of the OIEC (International Organisation for Catholic Education), will participate in the one and a half hour meeting. In addition, Piarist teaching experiences from Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Africa will be shared around the main themes of Integral Ecology, Human Dignity, Solidarity and Development, and Peace and Citizenship.

All those involved in any way in the Piarist mission in schools, extracurricular education centres and parishes, as well as leaders of parents’ and alumni associations are invited to the meeting.
