La escuela, en cuanto institución social destinada a la formación integral del niño y del joven, constituye un lugar privilegiado para la evangelización, entre los otros medios empleados por la Iglesia. Según Calasanz y nuestra tradición, la escuela popular es la actividad principal que, en cierto modo, ha constituido nuestra misión y le ha dado forma propia. Aún más, por su naturaleza y por la inspiración de nuestro Santo Padre, guarda tal conexión con el carisma calasancio que, donde no se nos prohíba la actividad escolar, es importante que no abandonemos esta tarea. San José de Calasanz concibió las Escuelas Pías como una institución escolar donde los alumnos recibían una formación integral en piedad y letras con un concreto plan de estudios, que incluía actividades como la catequesis, el oratorio, la oración continua, las cofradías y hermandades, los paseos al campo y la costumbre de acompañar a los niños a sus casas. Diseñó un modelo deescuela a pleno tiempo que pretendía formar ciudadanos activos, cristianos comprometidos y profesionales competentes.
La escuela popular ha sido el medio fundamental del apostolado escolapio al que jamás se ha renunciado, a no ser que obligue unafuerza mayor, como ha pasado en ocasiones en nuestra historia.
