The Bachelor’s Degree in Languages began in 1998 under the name of English Language. Over the years, the curriculum has evolved to train more specialized professionals, not only in teaching, but also in languages (English, French and Italian), as well as in translation and interpretation.<\/p>\n

The degree has an interpreting laboratory that serves as a simulator for interpreting practice. This space is essential to prepare students for the professional environment, providing them with the opportunity to develop practical skills in a controlled environment that faithfully reproduces the real working conditions of a professional interpreter. The laboratory is equipped with acoustically isolated interpreting booths, designed to minimize external noise and allow students to fully concentrate on their task. It is also equipped with professional equipment, such as microphones, headsets and interpreting consoles, and audiovisual equipment, such as screens and projectors, to display visual support material during simulations.<\/p>\n

The campus also has a Self-Access Center, designed to provide students with a wide variety of resources and tools to improve their language skills in an effective and personalized manner. The center has 18 computers for independent work, facilitating the reinforcement of reading and listening skills and the use of grammar and vocabulary in the three languages (English, French and Italian). It also has two cubicles where workshops are held to reinforce oral and written skills.<\/p>\n

One of the most outstanding events of the degree program is the Academic Days, held annually. During these days, students demonstrate their skills by organizing various committees (scientific, dissemination and promotion, public relations and logistics), led by their professors, to offer workshops, conferences and educational and recreational activities, in which not only the students themselves participate, but also local and foreign guest experts. These conferences, which last for three days, allow students to actively participate in all the programmed activities.<\/p>\n

It is significant to note the growing interest of students in this area. Some students aspire to become teachers, a noble profession with ample job opportunities. Others wish to live abroad, become interpreters, tour guides, translators or work in travel agencies, airlines or cruise ships. The pandemic has increased online job opportunities, favoring both teaching and translation.<\/p>\n

Many students are committed to the profession, with a desire to learn that transcends the classroom. However, some face more difficulties, so one of the great challenges is to achieve language integration and raise students’ awareness of the importance of learning both inside and outside the classroom. Every effort made will benefit their future.<\/p>\n

Annually, some students participate in programs outside the country: Germany, Spain and Colombia, Chile and Canada, although less frequently. As for summer camps, each year, approximately ten to fifteen students participate in summer work camp programs in the United States.<\/p>\n

Within the international experience, students participate in different activities, such was the case in the period August – December 2023 where students from different semesters were supporting as volunteer interpreters in the ParaTaekwondo 2023 world event, an activity where they could, apart from living with people from other parts of the world, put into practice interpreting skills, socialization and technological skills.<\/p>\n

All of our students, over the course of four years, have the opportunity to live diverse experiences that enrich their human side, a distinctive characteristic of this university. Through different subjects, programs and activities, they strengthen their principles, making a big difference. We not only train professionals, but also people with great values who, we are sure, will carry the name of the university high.<\/p>\n

I am proud to be part of the many successful graduates, since this degree has given me many opportunities not only in teaching, but also in the field of administration and management. Being in charge of managing students and teachers in my own area is easy because of our affinity. I have always considered that knowledge of more than one language is a distinctive and valuable tool, especially in this globalized world full of opportunities and challenges.<\/p>\n
